Action Plan for each 6 factors that affect learning from chapter 2 (understanding your students)

As a teacher, I have to understand many factors. As students come from different background, personalities, and ideas, their Learning styles are also different. The teacher have to understand understanding of individual differences, cultures, and communities. Therefore, students need different instructions on learning.

  1. The effects of General ability on learning

I aware that different ages or students levels learn differently. The elementary student observation is limited to compare high school students. When teacher instruction is too high, elementary students may find difficult to understand. Students, learners, parents, and teachers have to aware their misconcept on students’ intelligences. They express smart or stupid, slow or fast based, high, or low on students’ behaviors and responds. In the future, I will not define or decide students’ intelligence based on their performance because students are unique and have different abilities based on their experience, interests, and their supports. Instead of labeling them, i will appreciate their efforts, and encourage them to aware they are potential and valuable. I will guide that students to know that their school grades are the results of their efforts which is a general intelligence, helping each other instead of discrimination each other in the class. This concepts can develop students’ mindset.

  1. the effects of specific ability on learning

Specific ability is to predict not only grades but also performing in real-life. Specific ability or intelligence are aptitudes. In the future in educational institution, I will not measure their aptitudes in classroom, but I have to know how their aptitudes influence on the performance. If i know students specific ability, I can able to find their learning problem. When I can solve their learning problem roots, it will effect the degree of learning, helping them to develop their specific abilities.

  1. the effects of culture, socioeconomic students, and language proficiency on learning

I will apply this knowledge in the future classroom, creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment in different cultural, socioeconomic, and languages of all students. As an educated person, teacher should be a role model who can inspire the students. Therefore, I will show myself who respect diversity, different cultural norms and values of my students. I will bring students to familiar different cultures and give ideas that we all are brothers and sisters in Christ. In Galatians 3:28 "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." As a third language teacher, I will be a good example of students in learning second language. I will encourage language growth by using visuals, gestures, simple language to non-native English speakers. I aware that learning in second or third langue is extremely challenging. When I was in primary, I learned with my second langue in class instead of my mother tongue. Moreover, when I am in university, I have to learn with my third language. I have faced language barrier in the whole life. Therefore, I really aware that experience. I will also allow students to share their native languages and use them as a resource in the classroom. Different students need different instruction to meet learning objectives. However, sometimes the teaching methods that conducted by researcher will not always work. Therefore, I will focus on my student’s learning preference, or the best ways that they can observe.

  1. the effects of personality and learning

Although I have fulfilled the skills that need for a teacher. I will still need to improve because I am also a fallen nature. I will not be a perfect teacher. Therefore, I will keep reflecting on my professional career, avoiding bias and improving my skill by asking feedback from my students, doing assessments, and observing by my peers.
